MBA President Thomas M. Bond
The following is a statement by Massachusetts Bar Association President Thomas M. Bond on today’s Senate confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court:
We applaud the Senate’s historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. Today’s bipartisan vote in favor of Judge Jackson’s nomination reflects her outstanding legal credentials, including her previous judicial service on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the federal district court in the District of Columbia.
A Harvard Law School graduate and one-time law clerk for Justice Stephen Breyer, Judge Jackson will also become the first public defender to serve on our country’s highest court. Her unique perspective as a former advocate for indigent criminal defendants represents an important addition to the court, and the landmark nature of today’s confirmation signifies our nation’s ongoing commitment to diversifying the justice system.
