Job Shadow -- Groundhog Day - Feb. 2, 2004
For one day in February, the MBA sponsors young people from various communities in the commonwealth to "shadow" attorneys so they can gain an appreciation for legal work in general and the area shadowed in particular. The goal of Job Shadow is to provide a favorable experience to students, foster an appreciation for the importance of living in a society of laws, create a positive impression of lawyers and introduce students to a variety of careers available at a law firm.
Attorneys from all areas of law are encouraged to participate -- business, probate, real estate -- all are equally interesting. During Job Shadow Day, attorneys are encouraged to visit local courthouse and introduce the young people to other legal professionals in and outside of their offices.
Mock Trial judges needed immediately In preparation for the 19th Annual Statewide Mock Trial Program, the MBA invites you to volunteer as a judge. Open to all public and private high school students in Massachusetts, the Mock Trial Program is a rich curriculum that promotes the development of fundamental knowledge, sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
Students are placed in a simulated courtroom situation where they assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a hypothetical case.
This year's case is a trial before a judge on the merits of the case as to liability and damages. In this case, the plaintiff alleges the defendant contributed to the infringement of copyrighted material by a third person. Was the student encouraged to infringe the copyright of the musician or was the student the lone infringer? Is the professor liable for contributory infringement or was it a fair use of the musician's work in a scholastic setting? You be the judge.
Elder Law Education Program
In celebration of Law Day in May, MBA members throughout the state volunteer to speak at local senior centers or councils on aging on various elder-legal topics. Topics range from basic elder legal issues to more substantive areas of law.
Client Service Pamphlets
The MBA publishes pamphlets explaining the basic legal issues surrounding common situations that your clients may face, such as buying a house or drafting a will. Displayed in your office reception area, the pamphlets are a great enhancement to communication and client service. You may purchase these pamphlets in bulk for a nominal fee.
