"How to Start and Run" conference draws large crowd

Issue December 2006

MBA President-elect and program co-chair David W. White-Lief called the "How to Start and Run a Successful Solo or Small-Firm Practice" seminar in Needham on Oct. 25 the "best session of this program that we have ever done."

The seminar, which was a day-long, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event, covered everything that an attorney needs to know about setting up a firm. Topics ranged from selecting a practice area and choosing a location and office space, to client relations, case selection, networking and advertising.

The panels featured a variety of seasoned attorneys who were eager to share their advice and experiences with the audience. Co-chair Marc L. Breakstone of Breakstone, White-Lief & Gluck PC, called the speakers "informative, inspiring and, at times, entertaining."

The conference drew over 140 attendees, including non-attorneys like Carol Gagnon, business manager for Freeman, Davis & Stearns LLC. "I attended the seminar because I wanted to get as much information as I could about the BBO, IOLTA, bookkeeping systems and other general information," she said. "I've been in financial management for a long time, but I had never worked for a law practice before."

Gagnon was impressed by the substance of the program. "The event was so well done," she explained. "The speakers provided a lot of information in a short amount of time; the content was very succinct."
