Freitas sisters to receive Youth Justice Award

Freitas+Sisters+Honoree+ImageOn Tuesday, Dec. 6, Citizens for Juvenile Justice will present the 2022 Thomas E. Coury Youth Justice Award to attorneys Cristina Freitas and Debbie Freitas, who serve on the Massachusetts Bar Association's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and Juvenile & Child Welfare Section Council. The Freitas sisters are being honored for their outstanding work representing young people in juvenile court; setting a sterling example of zealous, anti-racist representation; and establishing the highest standards of advocacy at the state and national levels.

At Freitas & Freitas LLP in Lowell, the Freitas sisters concentrate their practice concentrates primarily on representing indigent parents, children and young adults in delinquency, youthful offender, care and protection, permanency, and child requiring assistance matters at the trial and appellate level, as well as representing children in school discipline and special education matters.

Two MBA members join Todd & Weld 

Mombeleur Shayla_01digital bkgdMBA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair and Executive Management Board member Shayla Mombeleur has joined Todd & Weld LLP as an associate and will concentrate her practice on criminal defense and government investigations.

Prior to joining Todd & Weld, Mombeleur was a trial attorney for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, where she defended clients facing felony and misdemeanor charges from arrest to final disposition. She conducted jury trials, represented clients in involuntary commitment matters, and conducted training programs on jury selection.

 

Black Hannah_01digital bkgdMBA member Hannah Black has also joined Todd & Weld as an associate and will concentrate her practice on criminal defense, government investigations and health law.

Prior to joining Todd & Weld, Black was an assistant district attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, where she supervised staff attorneys and managed hundreds of criminal cases involving a variety of charges, including domestic assault and battery, OUI, unlicensed possession of firearms, and distribution of Class A, B and D drugs, as well as sensitive investigations involving motor vehicle fatalities and sexual assaults.

Papandrea joins Morgan, Brown & Joy

Robert Papandrea Headshot (002)MBA member Robert Papandrea has joined Boston labor and employment law firm Morgan, Brown & Joy as an associate. 

Papandrea advises and defends employers in matters related to employer-employee relationships. His work spans both litigation and counseling, guiding business owners and management, human resources professionals, and in-house counsel in matters related to workplace discrimination and harassment, internal investigations, leave laws, and workplace accommodations, among other daily employment needs. He also handles labor issues, including collective bargaining and contract negotiations.

Arrowood attorneys earn legal victory

Arrowood LLP attorneys and MBA members Lisa G. Arrowood, William F. McGonigle and Sarah E.A. Sousa, counsel to plaintiff Dr. Stephen Zappala, recently scored a legal victory when, in the first Massachusetts state court decision of its kind, a Suffolk Superior Court judge ruled that the peer review privilege does not bar the admissibility of materials related to an internal disciplinary action against Dr. Zappala, who is suing Steward Health Care System for retaliating against him.

*Awards should not include mentions in Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, AV ratings and other list-type awards due to the large number of attorneys who receive them.
