In an annual celebration of Law Day dating back to 1988, more than 55 attorneys participated in the Massachusetts Bar Association's May series of free educational presentations for older adults at senior centers and councils on aging around the commonwealth. Coordinated by the MBA's Community and Public Service Department, this year's volunteers delivered over 70 total presentations on important issues in the field of elder law, including, wills, estate planning and retirement preparation.

In addition to its educational outreach, the MBA distributed a comprehensive resource, the 2024 Elder Law Education Guide (ELG), to all participating councils on aging/senior centers and volunteer attorneys. This year's 15th edition features an expanded Table of Contents that provides a full overview of each chapter, helping readers more easily find information on topics of interest. With a focus on addressing the needs of older adults as they age, the guide covers issues ranging from estate planning and the probate process to long-term care insurance and protection of the family home and other assets. The guide also discusses planning strategies for disability and incapacity, for Medicare and other public benefits, and for Social Security during retirement, as well as housing options and alternatives to nursing homes.

The ELG was produced by the MBA's Elder Law Advisory Committee with the generous assistance and continued collaboration of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

The ELG is available to all MBA members to read or download at www.massbar.org/elderlaw. If you would like to order a hard copy, please contact the Community Service Department at communityservices@massbar.org.

Thank you to the many attorneys, listed below, who graciously volunteered their time for the 2024 program. The MBA also thanks those volunteers who helped complete this year's celebration of Law Day by speaking to students at more than a dozen local high schools about voting rights in America (see related story).
