What Estate Planners Need to Do to Comply with SJC Rule 1.4

All your probate and planning questions answered in 60 minutes or less! Grab your coffee and join the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Probate Law Section Council for short, focused lessons in the world of probate law and estate planning practice.

Join Judge George Phelan of the Probate and Family Court for a discussion of the challenges to estate planners who serve clients of limited English proficiency and complying with Supreme Judicial Court Rule of Professional Conduct 1.4: "Communication."

The influx of immigrants as well as disciplinary rulings and ethics opinions from multiple jurisdictions highlight the importance of reasonable communication by attorneys, including: use of interpreters, translators and real-time interpreting devices. Even attorney cultural capacity on a client-by-client basis might be scrutinized.
