Eugene O'Flaherty |
The Massachusetts House Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, State Rep. Eugene L. O'Flaherty (D-Chelsea) has been named the MBA's Legislator of the Year. He will be honored during the association's Annual Conference 2004 Gala Dinner on Friday, Jan. 23 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel.
Also on the evening's program will be keynote speaker Marian Wright Edelman, president and founder of the Children's Defense Fund.
O'Flaherty represents the Second Suffolk Representative District of Massachusetts, which consists of most of Chelsea and the entire Boston neighborhood of Charlestown.
He graduated from Malden Catholic High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Suffolk University in 1991. He was awarded a juris doctor in June 1994 from the Massachusetts School of Law and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar that same year. In 1995, O'Flaherty was admitted to practice at the federal bar.
He was elected to his first term in the House of Representatives in 1996 and was sworn in on Jan. 1, 1997.
Currently in his fourth term in the House, O'Flaherty serves as the House chairman of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, chairman of the Special Commission on Judicial Management, chairman of the Immigrant's Caucus and vice-chairman of the Airport Caucus.
In addition to his legislative duties, O'Flaherty is a practicing lawyer and has been with the Boston and Somerville law firm of O'Donovan & Lyons since 1994.
The youngest of five brothers and the only member of his immediate family born in the United States, O'Flaherty lives in Chelsea with his wife, Patricia, who was born and raised in Chelsea.
