Massachusetts Bar Association Chief Legal Counsel and Chief Operating Officer Martin W. Healy was honored by the Equal Justice Coalition with a Beacon of Justice Award at the Massachusetts State House on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Nine legislators, including House Majority Leader Ronald Mariano (D-Quincy) and Rep. Marjorie Decker (D-Cambridge), and four attorneys were selected as honorees for their significant support of state funding for civil legal aid through the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation. MLAC is the largest funding source for civil legal aid organizations in the commonwealth, aiding nonprofits that provide critical legal assistance to low-income residents facing serious legal problems, such as foreclosure, eviction and domestic violence.

“I am humbled to be recognized for championing a cause that is at the core of the MBA’s mission to provide access to justice for all,” Healy said. “We will continue to represent our most vulnerable citizens in the fight for equal justice for all and look forward to further collaboration with our valued partners at the Equal Justice Coalition.”

The Equal Justice Coalition is a collaboration of MLAC, the MBA and the Boston Bar Association. It advocates for increased funding for civil legal aid, through the line item for MLAC. The largest funder of civil legal aid in Massachusetts, MLAC funds legal aid organizations across the state that provide legal advice and representation to low-income Massachusetts residents facing serious civil legal problems.
