The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) received $24 million in funding from the Senate late last night, May 22.
An amendment filed by Senate Majority Leader Cynthia Stone Creem (D-Newton) and Senate Judiciary Chairman Jamie Eldridge (D-Marlborough) was passed on the Senate floor by a 39-0 vote, giving MLAC $2 million over the funding recommended by the Senate Ways and Means Committee earlier this month.
The House of Representatives previously approved $23.5 million in funding for MLAC. The legal aid line item now goes to a conference committee charged with reconciling the House and Senate versions of the budget.
The MBA will continue to advocate for increased funding for MLAC. Thank you to those MBA members who contacted their legislators in support of MLAC’s budget.
