The Massachusetts Bar Association will present its Outstanding Young Lawyer (OYL) Award to workers’ compensation attorney Mariana Medeiros at the 2024 MBA Annual Dinner on May 2 at the Westin Boston Seaport District. The annual award, chosen by the MBA’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD), recognizes a young lawyer who has demonstrated outstanding character, leadership and legal achievement, and has contributed service to the community.
The YLD’s OYL Committee selected Medeiros for this year’s award based on her deep commitment to education and advocacy on behalf of the immigrant community in Massachusetts. As an attorney with Sobosik Law in Medford, Medeiros uses her fluency in Portuguese, English and Spanish to defend the interests of immigrant and other workers around the commonwealth. In her practice and away from the office, Medeiros takes a special interest in supporting individuals from her native Brazil, where she began her legal career before immigrating with her young family to the United States.
Although she is based in Greater Boston, Medeiros frequently travels with her husband to Cape Cod to educate area immigrant populations on workers’ compensation and other important rights. She is also a regular volunteer at free legal clinics and local events geared toward community empowerment.
“While still in the early stages of her career, Mariana Medeiros has already made a significant difference in the lives of her clients and an equally positive impact on society at large,” said OYL Committee member William Walsh. “Her dedication to advocating for immigrant communities and injured workers, in both professional and volunteer settings, makes her an ideal choice for the OYL Award.”
A licensed attorney in Brazil and Massachusetts, Medeiros passed the bar exam in her second language after earning an LLM from Suffolk University in Boston. She previously graduated in law from Universidade Tiradentes and earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Fundation Getúlio Vargas. While in Brazil, Medeiros advocated for workers in labor law cases and represented clients in matters involving consumer law.
