The Massachusetts Bar Association presents its In-House Counsel Summit, featuring the 11th Annual In-House Counsel Conference. The theme for this year's conference is "Hot Topics for In-House Counsel."

Edward Seksay, general counsel of Rockland Trust Company, will give opening remarks and address the evolving roles and responsibilities of the chief legal officer, including the importance of effective decision-making, economic efficiency and quality of service in the in-house law department.

Specific topics include:

  • Employment law issues in the contemporary work environment, including managing employees who work from remote locations, accommodating demands based on diverse needs and similar issues;
  • Comments from United States District Court Judge Dennis F. Saylor IV on issues that particularly affect in-house counsel, including evolving standards for discovery of electronically stored information;
  • Remedies and awards of attorneys' fees in trademark litigation, including the recent Fendi decision;
  • Best practices in contracts management, including recurring business contracts and contract terms, how to determine "what is market" in evaluating proposed terms, how to manage risks presented by company contracts and contract management systems; and
  • Challenges and strategies in complying with evolving data privacy laws, including data security and Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regulations.

Part of the In-House Counsel Summit, the conference will be preceded by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly's Business and Law Breakfast, sponsored by Yurko, Salvesen & Remz, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
