John J. McLaughlin
Longtime lawyer, FBI agent
John J. McLaughlin of Chestnut Hill, a lawyer in practice in Boston since 1939, died March 14. He was 88.
A life member of the MBA, McLaughlin served as a special agent in the FBI during World War II in various capacities, including anti-espionage work in the Midwest. Following the war, McLaughlin resumed private practice but remained active in the Society of Former Agents of the FBI.
A sole practitioner, McLaughlin specialized in probate, real estate and corporate law. He represented several Catholic charities, schools and nonprofit organizations, including Ursuline Academy, Youville Hospital, Marist Fathers and the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, where McLaughlin became closely associated with the late Richard Cardinal Cushing.
McLaughlin also was a member of many professional and civic organizations. He was a former director of Charlestown Co-Operative Bank and the president of Para Tours Inc., an organization pioneering access for the disabled in the 1950s.
