State Rep. Michael S. Day (D-Stoneham)
The Massachusetts Bar Association will honor State Rep. Michael S. Day (D-Stoneham) with its Legislator of the Year Award at the MBA Annual Gala on Thursday, May 11, at the Westin Boston Seaport District, 425 Summer St., Boston. The annual award recognizes state or federal legislators who have distinguished themselves in public service through outstanding contributions to the legal profession, courts and administration of justice.
Now in his second term as House chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, Day led efforts to secure passage of several MBA-supported measures, including a 2022 bill that provided $164 million in bond funding to modernize information technology infrastructure in state courthouses. A longtime proponent of state investment in civil legal aid, Day also worked with the MBA during the development of the fiscal year 2023 budget to secure a 12.5 percent salary increase for Massachusetts jurists.
"Through his legislative record on Beacon Hill, State Rep. Michael Day has proven himself a strong partner to the legal community and a strong voice for his constituents who struggle with access to justice," said MBA President Grace V.B. Garcia. "This award is a deserving acknowledgement of his service to the commonwealth and particularly his leadership as House chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary."
"As a lawyer by trade, Chairman Day is keenly aware of the importance of a properly funded court system that meets the needs of all its users," said MBA Chief Legal Counsel and Chief Operating Officer Martin W. Healy. "At the MBA, we are grateful for Chairman Day's partnership on several initiatives to improve the functioning of our judiciary, and we look forward to continued collaboration in future legislative sessions."
Day has served since 2015 as the state representative for the 31st Middlesex District, which includes the towns of Stoneham and Winchester. During his time in office, Day has focused his advocacy on advancing his district, enhancing civil rights protections, increasing access to mental health services and reforming recycling practices. In addition, as part of his role as judiciary chair, Day has advocated for inmate and correctional officer welfare and the constitutional freedoms of Massachusetts residents.
Currently, at the request of the speaker of the House, Day is conducting a comprehensive review of firearm policy and is in the midst of traveling across the commonwealth to engage with stakeholders directly in their communities.
Day and his wife Megan live in Stoneham, where they are raising their three sons, Conor, Ryan and Finnegan; two dogs, Oglethorpe and Riley; and two guinea pigs, Marvin and Fat Joe. Outside of the State House, Day spends his time in the arena coaching his son's hockey teams. Also, as a small business owner, he is a founding partner of the litigation boutique law firm Torres, Scammon, Hincks & Day LLP.
The Annual Gala will also include a keynote address by Juliette Kayyem, faculty chair of the Homeland Security Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, will deliver the keynote address. In addition to Day, the following individuals will receive awards:
