Two openings on the Clients' Security Board

The justices of the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) invite interested attorneys to apply for appointment to two available five-year terms on the Clients' Security Board, effective December 2022.

Pursuant to SJC Rule 4:04, the board is composed of seven members of the Massachusetts bar and manages the fund used to discharge the bar's collective responsibility with respect to losses caused to the public by defalcations of members of the bar. The board anticipates that members will be permitted to participate in board business virtually as needed, though meetings may also be held in person on occasion when circumstances permit.

Experienced attorneys with expertise in bankruptcy law, insurance and personal injury litigation, or criminal defense are encouraged to apply. The justices also seek applications from attorneys with legal aid, immigration, or other legal experience working with historically underrepresented or underserved communities. Attorneys with diverse backgrounds and experiences, as well as those who practice outside of the immediate Boston metropolitan area, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and one-page resume to Anna Rachel Dray-Siegel at anna.dray-siegel@jud.state.ma.us by Oct. 28. If you have questions about the application process or the position, contact Dray-Siegel.

Mass. Forensic Science Oversight Board
to host virtual summit

On Friday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., the Massachusetts Forensic Science Oversight Board (FSOB) will host its first sponsored virtual summit on the development, accomplishments, and future direction of the board. The purpose of the summit is to engage stakeholders throughout the criminal legal system about the state of forensic science in Massachusetts, share insights gleaned from the board's first several years of work, and foster dialogue about future work and challenges.

The FSOB invites all shareholders in the criminal legal system, including legislators, practitioners, lab personnel and members of the public, to attend this summit and learn about its work. Featured speakers will include FSOB members, forensic analysts, and representatives from the Texas Forensic Science Commission, Innocence Project, and San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

In the past, Massachusetts has had several highly publicized issues related to forensic services, including high-profile drug laboratory wrongdoing and forensic testing irregularities and issues. In 2018, amid calls to respond to these events and improve forensics services, the legislature passed a law establishing a multi-stakeholder Forensic Science Oversight Board (FSOB) as part of a broader Criminal Justice Reform Act.
