SJC committee extends pro bono
survey deadline

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services has extended the deadline to March 21 for attorneys to respond to a survey to help the committee better understand the kinds of volunteer legal assistance currently being provided by members of the bar and learn how to better support this work. The survey will collect information about lawyers’ current thoughts and involvement in pro bono. The information provided may be used by the committee to direct its future work and may be referenced in a report prepared for the SCJ or the general public.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and all information provided will remain anonymous. The survey contains 37 questions and should take about 15 minutes to complete. This research is being conducted for the committee by Northeastern University Master of Public Policy students. For questions, please contact Noor Hassan (hassan.n@northeastern.edu) or Brandon Goldman (goldman.br@northeastern.edu).

Take the survey here before March 21.

District Court to hold voluntary judicial settlement conferences, May 9-20

The District Court has created an opportunity to address civil litigation in a new way that will resolve cases before their trial date: Voluntary judicial settlement conference sessions will be held via Zoom from May 9-20, 2022, for all District Court civil contract and tort cases, with the goal of providing a prompt route to resolve civil litigation.

Parties may participate in a judicial settlement conference of pending cases by completing a judicial settlement conference request form and returning it to the court where the case is pending. Forms are available on mass.gov or in the Clerk’s Office and must be submitted by April 15 via regular mail, in-person filing or email. The parties will thereafter receive notice for a judicial settlement conference to be held via Zoom at a time between May 9 and 20. All attorneys, clients and those with settlement authority, such as insurance adjusters, must attend the entire Zoom conference session. Opting to participate in a judicial settlement conference will not affect any existing event dates in the case.
