2019-20 MBA President John J. Morrissey
The Massachusetts Bar Association will kick off its 2019-20 membership year on Sept. 1, under the leadership of new MBA President John J. Morrissey. During his year as president, Morrissey will lead the bar’s efforts to improve lawyer well-being and civility, with a focus on diversity and inclusion at the MBA and across the profession.
“The Massachusetts Bar Association’s doors have been open to all lawyers in the commonwealth since its founding nearly 110 years ago, and the fellowship of diverse members and ideas remains the MBA’s greatest strength,” said Morrissey. “In the months ahead, I look forward to growing our association and tackling some of the biggest challenges impacting our profession today, including the stigma of mental health and substance use disorders, stress, incivility, isolation, and other barriers to wellness identified in the Supreme Judicial Court’s July 2019 report on lawyer well-being.”
A founding partner of Morrissey, Wilson & Zafiropoulos LLP in Braintree, Morrissey practices in the area of plaintiffs’ personal injury, including wrongful death, catastrophic injury and workers’ compensation claims. He also represents individuals and businesses in commercial and real estate disputes. An accomplished trial lawyer, Morrissey has been named a New England Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers every year since 2005.
Morrissey is a member of the MBA’s Executive Management Board, the Leadership Academy Steering Committee and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Scholarship Committee; co-chair of the MBA Trial Academy; and an arbitrator on the Fee Arbitration Board. He has also served in the House of Delegates, and as chair of the MBA’s Judicial Administration Section Council. In 2013, Morrissey volunteered for the MBA Marathon Bombing Victims’ Legal Assistance Program, where he provided free legal services to victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Outside the MBA, Morrissey currently serves as chair of the Board of Bar Overseers of the Supreme Judicial Court.
Alongside Morrissey, the other 2019-20 MBA officers include President-elect Denise I. Murphy, Vice President Thomas M. Bond, Treasurer Grace V.B. Garcia and Secretary Damian J. Turco. Martin W. Healy is the MBA’s chief legal counsel and chief operating officer.
