Open Meeting - Primer on Marijuana in the Workplace and Non-Competes for In-House Counsel

Wednesday, June 13, 12-2 p.m.
MBA, 20 West St., Boston

The MBA's Business Law Council, Labor and Employment Council, and Young Lawyers Division are teaming up to bring you an excellent, condensed two-panel event addressing business risk and employment issues involving licensed marijuana use, and the application of non-compete agreements to in-house counsel.

Why come?
Ever wonder what you will advise as outside or inside counsel for a corporate client that has an employee taking medical or recreational marijuana and is not happy about it, or an employee who is taking it and afraid to let an employer know? If you are in-house counsel, or are hiring in-house counsel, or counseling an employer or an in-house counsel, what is the applicability of a non-compete agreement to a new legal or non-legal job with a competitor? What are the risks for various actions by the employer or in-house employee? In addition, what's happening with the non-competition legislation in Massachusetts, and what will happen practically if a version passes?

Part II - Effective Strategies for the Preparation and Trial of a Complex Commercial Case

Thursday, June 14, 4:30-6 p.m.
MBA, 20 West St., Boston

In this second half of a two-part program (begun April 12), two experienced practitioners and a Superior Court judge will guide you through the process of handling a complex commercial case. Find out the “best practices” for humanizing your client, identifying and exploiting key legal issues, taking depositions with a purpose and solving the particular challenges you will face at trial in such cases. The program will take you from the initial client meeting, through discovery and depositions and conclude with a discussion of how to effectively present such a case at trial.
