The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) received $21 million in funding from the Senate when it wrapped up its budget debate last week.
An amendment filed by Sen. Majority Leader Cynthia Stone Creem (D-Newton) and Senate Judiciary Chairman William Brownsberger (D-Belmont) and supported by 25 co-sponsors in the Senate, was passed giving MLAC $2 million over the funding recommended by the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
The House of Representatives previously approved $20.75 million in funding for MLAC. The legal aid line item now goes to a conference committee charged with reconciling the House and Senate versions of the budget.
The MBA will continue to advocate for increased funding for MLAC. Thank you to those MBA members who contacted their legislators in support of MLAC’s budget.
