|Amy Cashore Mariani is of counsel to Fitzhugh, Parker & Alvaro, LLP and currently works as a contract attorney in all aspects of litigation matters. She served as chair of the New Lawyers Section Council for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 terms.
It is never too late to think about your involvement with the section. During this bar year, the section will continue to promote the professional and personal development of MBA attorneys, who have been in practice for 10 years or less, through a variety of programs and volunteer opportunities. I would like to highlight two of them for your consideration.
First, the section will be cosponsoring the Northeast Regional Conference of the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division. The conference has been scheduled for March 19-20, 2004, and you should mark your calendars - the conference will feature important programming and networking opportunities for all.
The substantive sessions will be held at the Massachusetts Bar Association's headquarters on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 20 West St. in downtown Boston and will include programming focused toward bar leadership development, public service and continuing legal education. In addition, the conference will feature networking receptions and activities on Friday and Saturday evenings and provide attendees with several opportunities to meet colleagues from the northeast. Registration details will be available this fall.
Second, the Massachusetts Bar Association is providing scholarship opportunities for several individuals to attend the midyear and annual meetings of the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division. For more information on meeting dates and locations, please visit www.abanet.org. These scholarships are designed to assist those individuals who have an interest in attending the national meetings but who do not have other sources of reimbursement available to them.
If you've never been to a national meeting, I can promise that you will have the opportunity to attend some incredible programs and to have a terrific time meeting other attorneys from around the world. Several members of the New Lawyers Section are active members of the ABA's YLD leadership and will be happy to show you the ropes at the midyear and annual meetings. Criteria for scholarship selection include: availability of other sources of funding, involvement in the section and involvement in bar activities in your local or regional bar associations. Interested individuals can contact me at [e-mail acashore] or at (617) 354-8858 for additional information.
Please take advantage of these terrific opportunities. Thank you again for the privilege of serving as section chair for the past two years; it has been an honor to meet and to work with many of you, and I look forward to doing so again in the future.
