Michael R. Costa is a senior associate in the Health Business Practice Group of Greenberg, Traurig, LLP in Boston.
With the commonwealth of Massachusetts facing a budget deficit that could soon expand to $3 billion this year and the ever-increasing number of hospital and nursing home closures and levels of uninsured, it is clear that we are facing a health-care crisis.
As such, our work as business, health and individual rights lawyers has never been more important. Recognizing these issues, the Massachusetts Bar Association Health Law Section Council is committed to continue its efforts in member education, legislative tracking and community outreach.
Specifically, the Health Law Council will be sponsoring a series of continuing-education programs focusing on upcoming state and federal regulatory issues affecting providers and consumers alike. Also, the Health Law Council will be working closely with the Elder Law Section this spring to educate and council seniors on the new privacy protections offered through the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Although we face great challenges during these difficult times, I am encouraged by the amount of support the Health Law Council has received from its members and welcome all to help us in our endeavors this year.
