Building Your Law Practice through Board Involvement and other Non-Profit and Civic Activities

If you are in private practice, generating your own work is a good way to increase your career satisfaction.  By bringing in your own clients, you increase the likelihood that you are doing work you enjoy.  You raise your status at your firm, increase your compensation and create more job security.

There are many ways to market a law practice; but as a lawyer, you have a special opportunity to further both your practice and a good cause, by serving on the board of a non-profit or civic organization.  You can add great value to the success of a non-profit because you know how to plan, how to write and in general, how to get things done.  Similarly, by participating as a member of a committee in your town government, you can use your expertise to help move projects forward.

At this session, come learn about the myriad ways you can use board service to get involved in your community, do good and at the same time, build relationships with potential clients and referral sources.  Join us for lunch as we help you explore the “right” activities to get involved with, how to position yourself for board activity, and what your responsibilities are if you do decide to get involved.

Most importantly, we will discuss how to make the most of your involvement so that your volunteer activities can ultimately lead to new business. Specific topics include:

• Identifying the Right Board
• Getting on the Board
• Effective Use of Your Time
• Understanding Your Responsibilities
• When to Say Goodbye
