Fundamentals of Sophisticated Practice Part II: Critical Tax and Creative Compensation Issues

Divorce is an emotionally charged event, especially when there is lot of money at stake, and even more so when you are concerned that there is a lot of money at stake and are not sure how to prove it -- something which is becoming more of a challenge in today’s business environment of creative compensation packages and small businesses. To further complicate matters, practitioners need to know how to explain to a divorcing client the tax realities to avoid any post-divorce tax surprises.

Join our panel of experts as they discuss in detail:

  • How to pluck out of a complicated tax return the dollars which should be added into a person’s income for purposes of calculating support
  • How to recognize when components of income are being disguised and/or manipulated
  • How to read and recognize income on a K-1
  • Creative components of high-end earner compensation, such as stock vehicles, incentive income and bonuses, phantom income, fringe benefits, retirement and severance packages, and “golden parachutes”
  • Creative payroll, business expense and balance sheet management techniques
  • Special tax and transferability considerations which come into play when considering these types of compensation and in allocating these kinds of assets
